This week Patricia Racette makes her anticipated Metropolitan Opera Role debut as Salome in Richard Strauss\u2019 opera. The title role is known to be one of the most challenging roles in the soprano repertoire and it is no surprise that Racette is taking it on.<\/p>\n

The American soprano first sang the role last season at the Pittsburgh Opera where she scored rave reviews<\/a>. Critics raved about her German diction, her ample vocal power and her physical prowess creating the illusion of a young women. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Racette is an artist who has thrilled Met audiences and audiences around the world with her intense acting and her sumptuous voice. \u00a0Ever since her Met debut in 1994 in the role of Mimi in Puccini\u2019s \u201cLa Boheme,\u201d Racette has showcased her impeccable technique in a wide range of repertoire that includes Elisabetta in Verdi\u2019s \u201cDon Carlo,” Antonia in Offenbach\u2019s \u201cLes Contes D\u2019Hoffman,\u201d Ellen Orford in Britten\u2019s \u201cPeter Grimes<\/a>\u201d and the title role of Puccini\u2019s \u201cTosca.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She has also headlined the premiere of Tobias Picker-Scheer\u2019s world premiere \u201cAn American Tragedy\u201d and headlined the new production of Leoncavallo\u2019s \u201cPagliacci.\u201d Racette also has the distinction of being the third soprano in Met history to sing all three roles in Puccini\u2019s \u201cIl Trittico,\u201d a feat she also accomplished at the San Francisco Opera.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it was her Cio-Cio San that has now become one of her most iconic roles to date. Racette created one of the most unforgettable \u201cMadama Butterfly’s\u201d in recent history with her emotional singing and her acting. The Met even recorded one performance on the Live in HD series, which was later released by Sony Classical<\/a>. She recently said goodbye to the role as she decided to retire it from her repertoire. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently Racette added the role of Minnie in Puccini\u2019s \u201cLa Fanciulla del West\u201d and Katerina in Shostakovich\u2019s \u201cLady Macbeth of Mtsenk.\u201d She will also add the role of Roxane in Alfano\u2019s \u201cCyrano de Bergerac\u201d at the Metropolitan Opera. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
