The New York City Opera has just added four performances to its upcoming run of Leonard Bernstein\u2019s \u201cCandide<\/a>,\u201d citing popular demand.<\/p>\n

The opera was originally scheduled for performances from January 6 through 12, but four additional presentations have from Jan. 13-15.<\/p>\n

The opera will be directed by legendary director Harold Prince, best known for his work on Broadway where he directed \u00a0original Broadway productions of Kander and Ebb\u2019s\u00a0\u201cCabaret,\u201d Andrew Lloyd Weber\u2019s\u00a0\u201cEvita\u201d and\u00a0\u201cThe Phantom of the Opera\u201d\u00a0and numerous Stephen Sondheim\u2019s classics such as \u201cPacific Overtures,\u201d \u201cSweeney Todd<\/a>\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cMerrily We Roll Along.\u201d He has also directed opera, including a 1983 production of \u201cTurandot<\/a>\u201d starring Evan Marton and Jose Carreras in Vienna.<\/p>\n

He has also directed \u201cCandide\u201d with New York City Opera<\/a> in 1982 and 2008.<\/p>\n

\u201cI anticipate this production of\u00a0Candide with great enthusiasm. We\u2019ve made some changes and right now this material is as relevant as it could ever\u00a0be.\u00a0I expect the audience will connect with its message,\u201d said Prince in a press release form the NYC Opera.<\/p>\n

The opera will be celebrating its 60th<\/sup> anniversary, having premiered on Dec. 1, 1956. Prince, alongside Hugh Wheeler, put together a one-act version that ran on Broadway for 740 performances before being used for New York City Opera\u2019s \u201copera house version\u201d in 1982.<\/p>\n

\u201cEver since\u00a0Harold Prince\u00a0adapted it for New York City Opera in 1982, Bernstein’s\u00a0Candide<\/em>\u00a0has been an audience favorite, and remains the most successful show in the company’s history,\u201d\u00a0said New York City Opera General Director Michael Capasso. \u201cI am delighted to be bringing back this iconic work as the centerpiece of this pivotal City Opera season.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opera stars Tony Award-nominee Gregg Edelman, Tony Award-winner Linda Lavin, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Mehan Picerno, Keith Phares, Jessica Tyler White and Broadway favorites Chip Zien and Brooks Ashmanskas.
