{"id":76164,"date":"2023-03-24T00:00:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-24T04:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/?p=76164"},"modified":"2023-10-31T08:49:38","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T12:49:38","slug":"the-opera-that-took-ten-years-to-write-julia-perry-the-symplegades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/the-opera-that-took-ten-years-to-write-julia-perry-the-symplegades\/","title":{"rendered":"Opera Profile:  Julia Perry\u2019s \u2018The Symplegades\u2019 &#8211; The Opera That Took 10 Years to Write"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 style=\"text-align: right;\">Photo: David Lees\/Getty Images<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the many criminally unrecognized names in the American classical music canon, African-American female composer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julia_Perry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julia Perry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1924-1979) represents the hidden aspect of the Black African-American compositional experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside other composers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florence_Price\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florence Price<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margaret_Bonds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margaret Bonds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nora_Holt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nora Holt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and male composers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Grant_Still\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Grant Still<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vicente_Lusitano\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vicente Lusitano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and \u201cBlack Mozart\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges\">Joseph Bologne<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Perry\u2019s contribution to America\u2019s classical music history has not yet gotten its day in the sun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a composer, she looked towards neo-classicism for her aesthetic inspiration, drawing inspiration from traditional forms yet invigorating them in new and exploratory ways without ever sacrificing an innate sense of musical sophistication. Having been a teacher of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nadia_Boulanger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nadia Boulanger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luigi_Dallapiccola\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luigi Dallapiccola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Perry\u2019s talent was not unrecognized nor ignored during her life thanks to her tasteful usage of modernist spices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as an opera composer, she was not a one-and-done composer. Despite having finished four operas, her name has been essentially erased from operatic history thanks to numerous problems, including missing manuscripts, the infrequency of recordings and stagings, and the gradual passage of time, which gave rise to more household names.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to Perry\u2019s operatic activities, her first opera, \u201cThe Bottle\u201d (1953) had been finished during her study with Boulanger in Paris. This came after the publication of some of her first works, which demonstrated her adept usage of African-American spirituals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her next three operas were written in a span of ten years, during which her life took a major turn. In 1967, she took a job at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College and had just published one of her most famous works, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homunculus_C.F.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homunculus C.F.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1960). In 1951, her other famous work, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lu5JijV5fv8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stabat Mater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d became one of the works that were slowly developing her name. But her opera, \u201cThe Symplegades,\u201d is a project mired in mystery to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work was three acts and based on the 17th-century witch trials, which other composers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/q-a-ashi-day-on-waking-the-witch-contemporary-opera\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashi Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashi-day.com\/wakingthewitch\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waking the Witch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022) and, most famously, Robert Ward (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Crucible_(opera)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Crucible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1962) have used as a theme. Unfortunately, Perry died at the age of 55, having never completed the work after nearly ten years of constant work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Without more research, there is little hope that the work will be finished or even performed, as it is unknown if there is a manuscript of the opera left. The opera had come at a time when Perry\u2019s name was beginning to gain traction among American audiences.
