{"id":76370,"date":"2023-04-27T00:00:10","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T04:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/?p=76370"},"modified":"2023-10-31T08:49:49","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T12:49:49","slug":"opera-wiki-robert-gerhards-the-duenna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/opera-wiki-robert-gerhards-the-duenna\/","title":{"rendered":"Opera Profile: Robert Gerhard&#8217;s &#8216;The Duenna&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Duenna_(opera)#Performance\">The Duenna<\/a> was the only opera written by Spanish-Catalan composer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Gerhard\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Gerhard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1896-1970), a student of the serial composer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arnold_Schoenberg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arnold Schoenberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1874-1951) himself an opera composer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspired from the eponymous 1775 story by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irish playwright <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Brinsley_Sheridan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Brinsley Sheridan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and set in 18th century Seville, the three-act opera is a comical story about double-crossing and love triangles under the nose of the dominating father Don Jerome. The work\u2019s music is a mixture of serialism and romanticism, but the former part was said to have been frowned upon by Gerhard later in his life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opera was written at a time when the composer was beginning to reach more heavily into his cultural roots, other works during the period like his balletic setting of 16\/17th century Spanish writer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miguel_de_Cervantes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miguel de Cervantes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 story Don Quixote and Soir\u00e9es de Barcelone two examples of his creative focus. Despite its cultural theme, the opera was never popular in Spain itself, but rather found acclaim in the United Kingdom where it was premiered both on-air (1949) and on the stage (1992). In the premiere, the role of Don Jerome was sung by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/u\/1\/d\/1xsVKG4c-NMrlKmu88Tzfmn8xMSmAewvz92VNiGT_CLU\/edit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Van Allan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the only one to sing at the 1992 premiere and on the 1996 recording.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opera was formally composed from 1945-47, the same year that World War II had ended in the Nazi defeat and seven years away from the death of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Shortly after completion, in 1949 the BBC Radio had premiered the work on a live-broadcast by conductor<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stanford_Robinson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford Robinson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who took the job as conductor from 1949 to 1953. In 1951, the opera was revised and premiered again at the International Society for Contemporary Music festival in Wiesbaden, Germany. However, these revisions were not well received by critics at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opera was neglected until 1992 when it was given its English-language premiere by the Teatro Lirico Nacional in Madrid, conducted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antoni_Ros-Marb%C3%A0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antoni Ros-Marb\u00e0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Opera North also gave the work its UK premiere but it was not recorded. In 1994, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bielefeld_Opera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bielefeld Opera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> performed a new version of the work.
