{"id":76627,"date":"2023-04-26T00:00:09","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T04:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/?p=76627"},"modified":"2023-10-31T08:49:44","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T12:49:44","slug":"opera-wiki-kaija-saariahos-emilie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/opera-wiki-kaija-saariahos-emilie\/","title":{"rendered":"Opera Profile: Kaija Saariaho&#8217;s &#8216;\u00c9milie&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 style=\"text-align: right;\">(PC: JP Maurin)<\/h6>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89milie_(opera)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c9milie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a 75-minute, nine-scene opera by the Finnish composer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/saariaho.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaija Saariaho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which takes its plot from the historical figure <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89milie_du_Ch%C3%A2telet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marquise \u00c9milie du Ch\u00e2telet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1706-1749), polyglot and mistress to famous French philosopher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voltaire\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fran\u00e7ois-Marie Arouet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or Voltaire). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work, while its own opera, is to be considered related to Saariaho\u2019s 2006 oratorio <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Passion_de_Simone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Passion de Simone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The work has remained on-stage, in 2020 being performed at Peabody Conservatory by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_Futral\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth Futral<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foregrounding Chatelet&#8217;s difficulties in navigating her intellectual development with her romantic interests, the opera takes her promotion of Isaac Newton\u2019s discoveries and places it against the fact that she died in childbirth. Having literally become a symbol of the sacrifice women must endure at the hands of nature, Sarriaho cast the woman as someone stuck in between worlds. Even though Chatelet loved the fine things in life, she also loved to deepen her intelligence. Thus, she was being held between two worlds that seemed to pull her in opposite directions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opera was written in 2008, although conceptions about a soprano-only work started as early as 1998. The work began by preparing the libretto, written by Lebanese-French librettist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amin_Maalouf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amin Maalouf<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Musically, the harpsichord plays a leading role as it echoes the conventional instrumentation that most 18th-century French elites would have heard and had access to during the period. It also acts as the voice of Chatelet via the use of real-time electronic manipulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It had its premiere in 2011 at the Spoleto Festival alongside other notable composers like Gian Carlo Menotti and Wolfgang \u201cAmadeus\u201d Mozart. Reviewers raved about the work\u2019s innovative look at the complex relationship between mankind and nature, The New York Times writing it was \u201ca tour de force for soprano\u201d as the soprano is forced to practically sing without end for 75 minutes.
