Known for his work in developing and popularizing the compositional philosophy known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Objectivity\">New Objectivity<\/a>, Hindemith\u2019s music was both tonal and not tonal. Exploring the limitations and extensions of traditional musical systems, thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serialism\">serialism <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Arnold Schoenberg, composers were now open towards expressing themselves in elaborate ways. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opera was completed in 1957 and shares the same name with another work of Hindemith\u2019s, notably, the \u201cDie Harmonie der Welt Symphony\u201d (The Harmony of the World Symphony) composed in 1951 as a tasting of his future opera. Hindemith\u2019s fascination with Kepler led him to translate some of Kepler\u2019s earlier works (&#8220;Moon Dream\u201d), and eventually using Kepler\u2019s theorization on harmony as the foundation to his musical writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opera\u2019s main source of inspiration is the 1619 book entitled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harmonices_Mundi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harmonices Mundi&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Harmonies of the World), written by astronomer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Kepler\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johannes Kepler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Arguing in five chapters, Kepler shows how the geometrical construction of the world around us, the stars, and the planets have harmonic relationships which can be explained as proof of the existence of a Godly force. Inspired by the mathematical-philosophical writing of Ptolemy in his work, \u201cHarmonica,\u201d written to show the relationship between ratios and harmonics, Kepler\u2019s theorization argued that the orbital paths of the planets had Earth-bound significance on the nature of musical harmony. Rejecting the standardized system of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pythagorean_tuning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pythagorean tuning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tuning based on the perfect fifth and octave ratios, Kepler\u2019s system was built around the Grecian concept of \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musica_universalis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musica universalis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d He wanted to show how the natural world, the celestial world, and our own bodies all contribute to unique harmonic languages which all resonate with and through each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindemith had become interested in Mahler when he was a student at Yale. Musically, the musical planning seemed to have begun with his symphony, beginning in 1939, and soon in 1951 the opera began to be conceptualize through the symphony. However, in 1941 Hindemith\u2019s motet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicarts.com\/hal-leonard-in-principio-erat-verbum-moete-for-soprano-or-tenor-and-piano-vocal-series-softcover-by-paul-hindemith-main0342005\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Principio erat Verbum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had included music which would later be featured in the opera. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1956, although taking a considerable amount of effort, Hindemith finished the libretto and quickly finished the musical score. Once the opera was finished, Hindemith had noted that his opera was a biographical look at Kepler. As he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindemith.info\/en\/life-work\/biography\/1945-1953\/work\/die-harmonie-der-welt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThey are about the life and work of Johannes Kepler,\u201d specifically the astronomer\u2019s experiences while in appointment as the imperial mathematician in the court of Emperor Rudolf II and then towards his dramatic end of life. The main objective of Hindemith\u2019s opera, as explained by him, was to document Kepler\u2019s \u201csearch for the harmony that undoubtedly governs the universe.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1957, the opera was successfully premiered at the Munich State Opera.
