{"id":79233,"date":"2023-06-30T00:00:59","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T04:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/?p=79233"},"modified":"2023-10-31T08:49:59","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T12:49:59","slug":"opera-wiki-deborah-drattells-lilith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/opera-wiki-deborah-drattells-lilith\/","title":{"rendered":"Opera Profile: Deborah Drattell&#8217;s &#8216;Lilith&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilith_(opera)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Lilith&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the first opera by American composer and designer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deborah_Drattell\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deborah Drattell.<\/span><\/a> It was <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">composed during the 1980s and premiered in 2001 in New York City with contemporary theatre director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anne_Bogart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne Bogart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the helm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is based upon the biblical and mythological figure <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilith\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lilith,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the woman God created before Eve whose liberated stance and refusal to submit to Adam saw her expelled from the Garden of Eden and doomed to become a demon.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Story<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plot of Drattell\u2019s opera diverges from traditional, Christian theological accounts of Lilith and Eve, wherein the former is the scorned first woman while Eve is the submissive second who ultimately becomes the mother of the world. Rather, the opera depicts the funeral of Adam in the Garden of Eden. Eve is attendance but sees Lilith has also come. Eve confronts Lilith after discovering her despite her disguise. Ancient texts like the 7th century <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alphabet_of_Sirach\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alphabet of Sirach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make reference to this occurrence, so Drattell\u2019s operatic story is not so far-fetched. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After their initial confrontation the two women converse and come to understand one-another&#8217;s experiences and fates. The realization and acceptance of one\u2019s life becomes the opera\u2019s main theme. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opera teaches us to not only accept but embrace one\u2019s circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Performance History<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work on the opera began in the late 1980s with Drattell\u2019s 11-minute symphonic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Symphonic_poem\">&#8220;tone poem&#8221;<\/a> on the theme of Lilith. This work was performed with the New York Philharmonic in 1990 and soon after she expanded upon her fascination with the figure. At the time, she was a composer-in-residence at the Denver Symphony, and soon after the work premiered, the opera began to form. Ultimately, librettist David Steven Cohen was tasked with creating the libretto. The work had many well-known singers attached to it at the time of its planned premiere in 1997 with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dicapo_Opera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dicapo Opera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1981-2013). This had to be suspended due to labor disputes at the time, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This didn\u2019t stop Drattell from having her opera see the light of day. After some editing, the opera was performed in a concertized version at the 1998 Glimmerglass Festival. Due to its successful reception, the work had a new premiere lined up. In 2001, Drattell\u2019s first opera would be performed with New York City Opera, with the esteemed American mezzo-soprano <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beth_Clayton\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beth Clayton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Lilith, accompanied by internationally celebrated American soprano <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lauren_Flanigan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauren Flanigan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Eve. Filling out the rest of the six-person principle cast were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomnelis.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Nelis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the Seer\/Serpent who acts as the opera\u2019s narrator, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcusdeloach.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcus DeLoach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Eve\u2019s son, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danabethmiller.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dana Beth Miller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Eve\u2019s daughter. Alongside the soloists are a nine-person group of mimes and a full chorus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/library.ucsd.edu\/dc\/object\/bb2391720c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A full performance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the opera\u2019s staged version at UC Sand Diego was recorded in 2015, with the plot of the opera having changed considerably since its 2001 premiere. In this updated version, Lilith finds Eve in a modern American restaurant and asks Eve if Adam can be loaned for the day. This gets Eve to thinking that Adam is being deceitful behind her back. Flash to God&#8217;s &#8220;Garden of Eden&#8221;and a divorce is taking place between Adam and Lilith. Here, Lilith is made out to be the villain due her adultery and kidnapping of young boys. In the end, in order to stop Lilith Eve must become a bit like Lilith.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the performance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonnielander.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonnie Lander<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took on the role of Lilith or Claire, Eve (Eppy) was sung by Hillary Jean, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/music-cms.ucsd.edu\/people\/faculty\/emeritus_faculty\/philip-larson\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philip Larson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took on the role of \u201cThe Voice.\u201d Adam, Arnold, was sung by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alvinalmazan\/\">Alvin Almazan<\/a>.
