While the former has been around since the 1950s\u2014although only exploding into widespread popularity in 2010 with the creation of the &#8216;Oculus Rift&#8217; headset\u2014the latter began during the 1960s and has become one of the more prominent ways of blending real life with digital life. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both of these transformed reality technologies are taking huge strides in reinventing the ways in which opera houses, companies, and composers both create and perform opera. Virtual reality\u2019s origins, however, are in the 1950s with the work of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morton_Heilig\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morton Heilig<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyofinformation.com\/detail.php?id=2785\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Experience Theater.&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A type of theatrical experience that would interact with all five of the human senses, the prototype known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sensorama\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Sensorama&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the world\u2019s first taste of a virtual-reality experience.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning in the 1960s, tech pioneer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ivan_Sutherland\">Ivan Sutherland<\/a> created what is regarded as the first attempt at a VR headset called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sword_of_Damocles_(virtual_reality)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Sword of Damocles.&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> By the 1970s, things were really picking up, with innovations like the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aspen_Movie_Map\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspen Movie Map,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eric_Howlett\">Eric Howlett\u2019s<\/a> system called the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leepvr.com\/about.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Large Expanse, Extra Perspective,&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, most interestingly, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/ames\/spinoff\/new_continent_of_ideas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Virtual Interactive Environment Workstation.<\/span><\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 1990s would see the rise of affordable VR technologies, including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sega_VR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Sega VR&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Nintendo\u2019s 1995 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virtual_Boy\">&#8220;Virtual Boy,&#8221;<\/a> among many other products.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The rise of video game consoles and playable games ushered in a totally new era of digital entertainment. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicole_Stenger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicole Stenger&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immersive movie experiences certainly helped push VR into the world of entertainment, much like the efforts of Heilig and Sutherland in earlier decades. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VR headset innovations stalled during the 2000s, although the technology was not necessarily neglected. In 2010, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palmer_Luckey\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palmer Luckey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began designing the first prototype of what would become the dominant VR console to date: the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oculus_Rift\">Oculus Rift,<\/a> an over-the-head immersive headset that transported users to different cinematic worlds. Consonant with the growing involvement of new technology in opera was also the usage of 360-degree video<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0filming, seen in projects like Gran Teatre del Liceu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/opera-profile-gounods-extended-love-duet-romeo-et-juliette\/\">\u201cRom\u00e9o et Juliette\u201d<\/a> during their 2017\/2018 season. Later, in the wake of the 2019 pandemic, filmed and digital opera and opera projects exploded in popularity.
