“I, Claudius” and “Claudius the God<\/span><\/a>“ is a trio of operas composed by Spanish composer <\/span>Igor Escudero<\/span><\/a> and librettist <\/span>Pablo G\u00f3mez<\/span><\/a> during 2019 on the theme of two Roman rulers, <\/span>Augustus and Claudius, as well as the dynamics of the <\/span>Julio-Claudian family<\/span><\/a>. The opera\u2019s initial began in 2014 following the eponymous BBC TV series. The opera premiered at the Miguel Delibes Cultural Center in Valladolid, Mexico in June 2019 in a semi-staged version.<\/span><\/p>\n

The opera\u2019s central plots come from Robert Grave\u2019s eponymous <\/span>1934 novel<\/span><\/a> and 1935 novel, and after talking with the Robert Graves Foundation, Escudero began to construct his opera\u2019s trilogy. Musically, the opera combines Ancient modal language with contemporary orchestration and uses \u201ctraditional canons, formulas, and structures to approach a new dramatic synergy\u201d as the composer <\/span>notes<\/span><\/a>. The project itself was focused on exploring and expanding the operatic canon through a renegotiation with the structures of creativity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The narrative of the opera follows three chapters and stays true to the story told by Robert Grave\u2019s two novels. Filling out the cast were tenor <\/span>William Wallace<\/span><\/a>, soprano Conchi Moyano, and actress\/singer Est\u00edbaliz Martyn, and featured a <\/span>cast of 60<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Reviews<\/span><\/a> noted the weakeness of the staging and cheapness of the costumes yet the sophistication and grandeur of the music. Nevertheless, the opera <\/span>went on tour<\/span><\/a> shortly after premiering throughout cities in Mexico and Spain including M\u00e9rida, Bilbao, Zaragoza, and Madrid.<\/span><\/p>\n
