{"id":92816,"date":"2024-10-10T00:00:45","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T04:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/?p=92816"},"modified":"2024-10-10T00:26:02","modified_gmt":"2024-10-10T04:26:02","slug":"opera-meets-film-discovering-herzl-through-yonatan-cnaan-and-ido-ricklins-theodor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/operawire.com\/opera-meets-film-discovering-herzl-through-yonatan-cnaan-and-ido-ricklins-theodor\/","title":{"rendered":"Opera Meets Film: Discovering Herzl Through Yonatan Cnaan and Ido Ricklin\u2019s \u2018Theodor&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 style=\"text-align: right;\">(Photo Credit: Israeli Opera House)<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking three years to write, composer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yonatancnaan.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yonatan Cnaan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.israel-opera.co.il\/eng\/?CategoryID=263&amp;ArticleID=2108\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ido Ricklin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s opera, &#8220;Theodor: The Unknown Story of Herzl,&#8221; is a summarization of Theodor Herzl\u2019s life. It was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/culture\/article-822243\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">premiered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Israeli Opera House in 2023, following the attacks on October 7th, 2023. Conducted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nimrod_David_Pfeffer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nimrod David Pfeffer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the evening was powerful and monumental. Luckily, it was filmed live, with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/go2films.com\/films\/theodor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recording now available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for viewing per request. But even more exciting was the announcement of the film&#8217;s American premiere at the beginning of September. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 23, the film had its American premiere. In speaking about the event, Cnaan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/filmed-version-of-israeli-herzl-opera-theodor-to-premiere-in-ny\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cSharing Herzl\u2019s vision and values through my music feels more urgent than ever.\u201d So impactful, and topical, was the opera that it was named one of Opera Now\u2019s World\u2019s Best Operas of 2023. Returning to the Israeli Opera House in 2025, the opera and its filmed version are available for private screenings per request. Interestingly, other operas about Herzl also exist, like Alex Weiser and Ben Kaplan\u2019s opera, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/streicker.nyc\/events\/state-of-jews-opera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State of the Jews<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2024), along with topical operas about sensitive topics like dam Gorb and Ben Kaye\u2019s &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcjc.com\/current-news\/community-news\/9595-opera-set-during-the-holocaust-to-be-performed-at-ljcc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Path to Heaven<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2024). Thus, Herzl\u2019s legacy is secure and we are fortunate that artistic projects exist which spread his activities to larger audiences who don&#8217;t know him yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s discover a little bit more about Herzl\u2019s life, his many works, and the Jewish experience in opera.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Who Was Theodor Herzl?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considered by many as the &#8220;father&#8221; of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Types_of_Zionism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zionism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) played a seminal role in popularizing the belief through various ways. Whether through distributed pamphlets like &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Der_Judenstaat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Der Judenstaat<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1896, Leipzig and Vienna), establishing the &#8220;World Zionist Organization&#8221; (WZO) with co-founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Max_Nordau\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max Nordau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1897), or via diplomatic relations with everyone priests to sultans, Herzl worked towards the dissemination and popularization of Zionism. From novels, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Old_New_Land\">The Old New Land<\/a>&#8221; (1902), to meetings with Pope Pius X, Herzl tried nearly everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Having grown up in the late-19th to early-20th centuries, a time of anti-Semitism, at first he advocated for a more assimilationist orientation before rejecting his desire to combat anti-Semitism by advocating for a more political position on the matter. Beginning in the late-19th century onwards, publications like the 1897 article, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herzl%27s_Mauschel_and_Zionist_antisemitism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mauschel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; published in the newspaper &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Die_Welt_(Herzl)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Die Welt,<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> founded by Herzl the same year, became the principal documents which spearheaded the push towards realizing Zionism. Responding to the growing crises in European ways of life as industrialization, demographic shifts, and agrarian crisis, with many moving to urban regions for work, Herzl saw in late-19th Austro-Hungarian life that there were great divisions between how Jewish sects related to each other. While openly embracing European and non-Jewish cultural ways of being, referred to as &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_assimilation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish assimilation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; many did not, including Herzl who, starting his life as a &#8220;Germanophile,&#8221; transitioned after the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dreyfus_affair\">Dreyfus affair<\/a>.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He argued that the rife anti-Semitism was the push towards a fuller embrace of Judaism. While anti-Semitism was getting stronger, typified by British-German philosopher Housten Chamberlain\u2019s 1899 book, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Foundations_of_the_Nineteenth_Century\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; only 17 years before Madison Grant\u2019s 1916 book, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Passing_of_the_Great_Race\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Passing of the Great Race<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; so too was Zionism. Following the establishment of the World Jewish Congress in 1897, along with the popularization of other pro-Zionist works like Leon Pinsker\u2019s 1882 pamphlet, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auto-Emancipation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auto-Emancipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; Herzl\u2019s political activities grew more pronounced as the 20th century continued on. Participating in everything from the first of two &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hague_Peace_Conference\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hague Conventions<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in 1899, urging wealthy persons like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_de_Hirsch\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maurice de Hirsch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create organizations like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_Colonisation_Association\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish Colonisation Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1891) and offshoots like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palestine_Jewish_Colonization_Association\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palestine Jewish Colonization Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1924), Herzl\u2019s life was well spent. At the end of his life, he continued to advocate for a Jewish homecoming through diplomatic work across Europe. In 1903, after the 1903 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kishinev_pogrom\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kishinev pogrom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Russian Empire, repeated once again in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Kishinev_pogrom\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1905<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he met with Russia\u2019s first Prime Minister <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sergei_Witte\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sergei Witte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ask for the improved treatment of Jews in Russia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His last act was the proposal of the &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uganda_Scheme\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uganda Scheme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; an ambitious plan to create a Jewish homeland in East Africa. Highly controversial as it went against previous goals laid out in Zionism\u2019s first manifestation, the &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basel_Program\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basel Program<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1897), as well as being critiqued by the British for supporting Jews over their own people, it was ultimately rejected in 1905. However, as a result, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_Territorial_Organization\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish Territorial Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was created to find a solution to the problem of a Jewish homeland outside of Palestine. In the decades and century after his death, Herzl\u2019s legacy and work expanded with countless developments, tributes, and forms of legacy contributions to the cause of Zionism, and with this operatic film, his work has now become even more proliferated, albeit via a new medium.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;Jewishness&#8221; Through Opera<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Richard Wagner\u2019s anti-Semitic essay, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Das_Judenthum_in_der_Musik\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Das Judenthum in der Musik<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1850), he argued, \u201cSo long as the separate art of Music had a real organic life-need in it, down to the epochs of Mozart and Beethoven, there was nowhere to be found a Jew composer,\u201d yet he was so very wrong. As revived, rediscovered, and recovered operas by Jewish composers have shown, the Jewish experience through opera is as powerful then as it is now. While both Richard Wagner and Robert Schumann despised <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giacomo_Meyerbeer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giacomo Meyerbeer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on anti-Semitic grounds, hidden behind aesthetic critiques, he had a prolific career, including the operas like &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/semperoper-dresden-to-revive-les-huguenots\/\">Les Huguenots<\/a>&#8221; (1836) and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/opera-national-de-bordeaux-2021-22-review-robert-le-diable\/\">Robert le diable<\/a>&#8221; (1831). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From celebrated figures like Felix Mendelssohn to lesser-known figures like German <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julius_Eichberg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julius Eichberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, family friend of Mendelssohn, Jewish-Romanian composer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raoul_Gunsbourg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raoul Gunsbourg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, championed by Tsar Alexander III of Russia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adolphe_Samuel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolphe Samuel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one-time friend with Berlioz, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karl_Goldmark\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karl Goldmark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a prolific Viennese composer and cold acquaintance with Wagner, musical &#8220;Jewishness&#8221; is far from lacking in living essence. Most famously, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fromental_Hal%C3%A9vy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fromental Hal\u00e9vy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s acclaimed opera, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Juive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Juive<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1835), put both \u2018Jewishness\u2019 and Francophile grand opera on the map, celebrated by Wagner despite his anti-Semitic critiques. The ubiquity of anti-Semitism during the mid-late 19th century stopped many composers from hearing the beauty Jewish composers had to offer, only tolerating it in exceptional cases like that Hal\u00e9vy. Most unfortunate is the Strauss line\u2019s short Jewish legacy, Johann Strauss I\u2019s grandfather converting to Catholicism, whilst the Soviet composer <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/orelfoundation.org\/composers\/article\/veniamin_fleishman#:~:text=Fleishman%20was%20himself%20Jewish%2C%20and,figuration%20typical%20of%20Jewish%20music.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veniamin Fleishman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s musical infusions of Jewish folk music, incapsulated in his opera, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rothschild%27s_Violin_(opera)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rothschild&#8217;s Violin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1939-41), shows that \u2018Jewishness\u2019 can thrive in difficult situations. Other later operas like Jacob Weinberg&#8217;s &#8220;The Pioneers&#8221; (1941-47) attest to such a state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capturing the different facets of the Jewish experience through opera has come in many shapes and sizes. From the first opera written in Israel, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marclavry.org\/composition\/dan-hashomer-dan-guard-opera-op-158\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan Hashomer<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1945) by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marc_Lavry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marc Lavry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and premiered in 1950, figures like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/obituary-israeli-opera-artistic-director-michael-ajzenstadt-dies-at-71\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Ajzenstadt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and his seminal contributions as part of Israel Opera, to contemporary Hebrew operas like &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.israel-opera.co.il\/eng\/?CategoryID=1259&amp;ArticleID=6235\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mothers<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(2021), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being Jewish<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through opera is as diverse as it comes. As historical revivals like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/ashkenazy-festival-artistic-director-eric-stein-on-reviving-bas-sheve-the-importance-of-jewish-representation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashkenaz Festival\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s North American premiere of the only known pre-Holocaust Yiddish opera, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/ashkenaz-festival-2022-to-present-bas-sheve\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bas Sheve<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1924) also demonstrate, there is much we still don\u2019t know about the Jewish experience through opera. Further, the 2022 premiere of Eugen Engel\u2019s opera, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grete_Minde_(opera)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grete Minde<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(pre-1941) never performed during his lifetime and killed in 1943, by Theater Magdeburg show that there are many Jewish composers and works not yet known to the wider world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While historically-significant operas written during WWII like Kurt Weil\u2019s &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/We_Will_Never_Die\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Will Never Die<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1943), Viktor Ullmann\u2019s &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/opera-profile-the-story-of-viktor-ullmans-der-kaiser-von-atlantis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Der Kaiser von Atlantis<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1943) and\u00a0 Hans Kr\u00e1sa\u2019s &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/voices-boston-childrens-choir-presents-brundibar-and-but-the-giraffe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brundib\u00e1r<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1944) are three particularly well-known examples of Jewish operas written during Nazi dictatorship, other post-war examples also exist which give audiences a stark reminder of the horrors that befell the Jewish community. Among the many examples, Shulamit Ran\u2019s &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldtimesonline.com\/story\/entertainment\/2023\/02\/27\/iu-opera-performs-world-premiere-anne-frank-in-bloomington\/69924961007\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ann Frank<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2023), Mikis Theodorakis\u2019s celebrated &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mauthausen_Trilogy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mauthausen Trilogy<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1988) and Jake Heggie\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfcv.org\/articles\/preview\/survivor-stories-jake-heggies-two-holocaust-operas-come-san-francisco\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two operas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;For a Look or a Touch&#8221; (2007) and &#8220;Another Sunrise&#8221; (2012), showcase and typify the immortal phrase, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Never_again#:~:text=%22Never%20again%22%20is%20a%20phrase,his%201971%20book%2C%20Never%20Again!\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never again<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; But, and it must be stressed, WWII does not define the Jewish experience nor the Jewish experience through opera. Post-WWII Jewish operas like Alexander Veprik\u2019s &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Veprik\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toktogul<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1940\/1949), Josef Tal\u2019s experimentalist operas, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ashmedai_(opera)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashmedai<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1969) and &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/joseftal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/240-Libretto-E-OCR.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masada 967<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1972), Bruce Adolphe\u2019s &#8220;Mikhoels the Wise&#8221; (1982), and Solomon Epstein\u2019s Yiddish-language opera &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Dybbuk:_An_opera_in_Yiddish\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dybbuk: An opera in Yiddish<\/span><\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1999) show just how rich the pool really is.
