Situated in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bielefeld#History\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bielefeld<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> boasts a funny conspiracy theory that the city, in fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bielefeld_conspiracy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not exist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at all. However, the city does exist, and its cultural history is something to talk about. The birthplace of many notable individuals over the centuries, from expressionist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermann_Stenner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hermann Stenner,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0activist musician <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hannes_Wader\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannes Wader,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/composer-profile-richard-strauss-germanys-other-opera-genius\/\">Richard Strauss<\/a> scholar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hartmut_Schick\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hartmut Schick,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Bielefeld deserves its place in history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bielefelder-philharmoniker.de\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bielefelder Philharmoniker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their home, the art-deco <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rudolf-Oetker-Halle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rudolf-Oetker-Halle,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bielefeld also has its own opera and theater venue, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theater-bielefeld.de\/unser-theater\/buehnen-und-orchester-der-stadt-bielefeld.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bielefeld Theater,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0home of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bielefeld_Opera#History\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bielefeld Opera.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Covering three buildings, hosting up to 600 performances per year, the complex is a fascinating look into a long legacy of cultural patronage. First conceived of in the 1880s, the theater opened in 1904, had a rocky start during World War One, underwent renovation during World War Two, and in 1953, under the directorship of newly appointed Herbert Decker, Bielefeld Opera became a place of innovative works never before seen in the venue\u2019s history\u2014past <em>and\u00a0<\/em>present combined. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1978, British director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Dew_(director)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Dew<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took over and helped further the work done by his predecessors. After many tumultuous decades, in 2005 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.operabase.com\/gregor-zollig-a57609\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gregor Z\u00f6llig<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brought contemporary dance to the theater for the first time. In 2013, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.operabase.com\/sabine-schweitzer-a87371\/sv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sabine Schweitzer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took over as the theater\u2019s opera director, and was succeeded by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theater-bielefeld.de\/unser-theater\/team\/leitung-mitarbeiter.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Mund<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just recently.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, as interesting as the theater\u2019s history is, a very particular set of years, specifically the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opern-freund.de\/oper\/stadttheater-bielefeld\/opernwunder.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Bielefelder Opernwunder&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> era under German director <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heiner_Bruns\">Heiner Bruns,<\/a> stand out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During these 23 years, from 1975 to 1998, many currently unperformed and highly modernist works were championed by Bruns and gave the theater an international reputation which, it must be said, was not generally continued by his successor, Regula Gerber (1998-2005). Nevertheless, it is this period that deserves to be remembered as it was here that the theater became a beacon of experimental hope for the operatic world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixing modernist operas from the post-World War One era, pre-war \u2018grand opera,\u2019 and post-World War Two new works, Bruns focused on combining social commentary of the inter-war Weimar Republic era with post-war artistic experimentation. This resulted in a unique mixture of underperformed classical works like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Marschner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heinrich Marschner&#8217;s<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Der_Vampyr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Der Vampyr&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1828) alongside \u2018new\u2019 works such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franz_Schreker\">Franz Schreker\u2019s<\/a> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Der_Schmied_von_Gent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Der Schmied von Gent&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1932), and the even \u2018newer\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Ballad_of_Baby_Doe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Ballad of Baby Doe&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Moore\">Douglas Moore<\/a> (1956). Post-world war (both the first and second) modernist operas from the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Antheil\">George Antheil, <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Max_Brand\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max Brand,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Hindemith\">Paul Hindemith,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viktor_Ullmann\">Viktor Ullmann, <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ernst_Krenek\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ernst Krenek, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ernst_Toch\">Ernst Toch,<\/a> to name a few, were given a place alongside their progeny like <a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/composer-profile-americas-opera-historian-john-adams\/\">Adams,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nikolai_Karetnikov\">Karetnikov, <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moshe_Cotel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cotel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judith_Weir\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heitor_Villa-Lobos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Villa-Lobos.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the operas performed during Bruns\u2019 \u2018Bielefelder Opernwunder\u2019 era have had inconsistent revivals, with some having no contemporary revival as of yet. Schreker\u2019s generally unremembered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irrelohe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Irrelohe&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1924), premiered by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cologne_Opera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cologne Opera,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0was revived by Bruns in 1985 and received several performances, the latest being in 2022 by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Op%C3%A9ra_National_de_Lyon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Op\u00e9ra National de Lyon.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But many others performed by Bruns were then shelved once again. Antheil\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transatlantic_(opera)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Transatlantic&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1928) had a total of six performances before being all but forgotten (though it was revived by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minnesota_Opera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota Opera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1998). Bruns\u2019 love of French \u2018grand opera\u2019 saw the incorporation of quintessential works like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andr%C3%A9_Gr%C3%A9try\">Andr\u00e9 Gr\u00e9try\u2019s<\/a> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Z%C3%A9mire_et_Azor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Z\u00e9mire et Azor&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1771) and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fromental_Hal%C3%A9vy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fromental Hal\u00e9vy&#8217;s<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Juive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;La Juive&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1835) alongside modernist lyric operas like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bohuslav_Martin%C5%AF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bohuslav Martin\u016f&#8217;s<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julietta\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Julietta&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1938) and post-<a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/composer-profile-gustav-mahler-genius-composer-conductor\/\">Mahler<\/a> symphonic operas like <a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/composer-profile-celebrating-leonard-bernsteins-100\/\">Leonard Bernstein\u2019s<\/a> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Quiet_Place_(opera)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A Quiet Place&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1983). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, composers like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jake_Heggie\">Jake Heggie,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pierangelovaltinoni.it\/\">Pierangelo Valtinoni,<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stuart_MacRae_(composer)\">Stuart MacRae<\/a> have been featured\u2014but it is always supplemented by traditional, and highly predictable, composers like <a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/composer-profile-gioachino-rossini-an-italian-master\/\">Rossini<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/operawire.com\/composer-profile-giuseppe-verdi-italys-greatest-composer\/\">Verdi<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If anything, Bruns\u2019 legacy at Bielefeld opera represented a unique chapter in operatic history where post-war modernism was not an exotic \u2018Other\u2019 in operatic artistry, but simply an extension of opera\u2019s aesthetic development. Nowadays, these post-war experiments are hardly performed and if they are, they are done so in one-off ways. Instead, Bruns saw these operas as foundations in making sure opera progressed both upwards and outwards, maintaining a \u2018popular\u2019 connection without sacrificing artistry in the process.
