The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has announced the retirement of President and CEO Jonathan Martin on Feb. 16, 2025.<\/p>\n
Martin, who served a seven-year tenure, led the organization through a period of significant artistic growth and financial stability, expanding its outreach in the region and fostering a more inclusive and community-driven approach to classical music. Under his watch, the company grew its endowment by over $100 million and achieved 14 consecutive years of balanced operating budgets. His leadership also resulted in the creation of The Andrew J Brady Music Center\u00ae in 2021 and the ongoing development of a new outdoor performance venue to replace the Riverbend Music Center.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe seven years of leading the CSO in Cincinnati, a community that loves and nurtures the performing arts, has been unquestionably the highlight of my 45 years in the American orchestra field,\u201d said Martin in an official press release issued by the organization.\u201cI am proud of the strength of our institution and its broadened service to our community. While my decision to retire is bittersweet for me personally, it was made less so by knowing that the CSO is a strong, stable organization with fabulous musicians, an extraordinarily talented Music Director Designate, a dedicated Board of Directors and an administrative staff that is the envy of our field.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among the major initiatives to take place under Martin\u2019s direction were “CSO Proof,” a concert series dedicated to innovative performance formats, including collaborations with ballroom culture, multimedia, and immersive experiences. He also moved to address “systemic underrepresentation of BIPOC individuals in orchestral music,”\u00a0 leading the organization to be one of the first to establish Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer position. Additionally, Martin initiated the “Brady Block Parties Series,” free outdoor concerts aimed at engaging new audiences across Greater Cincinnati.<\/p>\n
In his stead, the company is promoting Robert McGrath to the role of Acting President and CEO. McGrath has been Chief Operating Officer since 2021 and has also served as Vice President and General Manager for the company from 2011-21.<\/p>\n
